Carer Services - Additional Carers' Programs and Services

If the person you care for has a disability, is frail aged or has a dementia or related disorder you can find information about what respite and support services we offer you and your person in the Disability and Aged Care Services section of this site.

In recognition of your experience and needs as a person in a caring role here is a summary of additional programs we run with you in mind.

Carer Support Groups

These support groups are conducted on the third Thursday of each month. Carers connected to Aged Care Services meet at lunchtime in Kingscliff to share their experiences and support each other and Carers connected to Disability Services meet at from 6pm in South Tweed for a light evening meal and mutual support. Respite is provided if required while you attend.

Life Connections

Life Connections is a creative educational and support program for carers of people with a disability or people who are frail aged and/or experiencing dementia. It includes Phone Connect, Connect U and Connect Creatively - all detailed below.

Phone Connect

Phone Connect is a telegroup program running across the NSW Far North Coast for carers who are geographically or socially isolated. With the assistance of a facilitator carers are able to gain support and support each other by phone. The program is conducted for one hour a week over seven/eight weeks. The program supports carers to:

Connect U

Connect U is an educational program providing specific strategies and invaluable information for people with disabilities and people who are frail aged or have a dementia or related disorder. This program aims to provide support, information, referral and education for carers within the Tweed Region. Specific information sessions include Advocacy, Service Provider Information, Stress Management, Nutrition, Introduction to Dementia, Managing Challenging Behaviours, Financial and Legal Issues as they pertain to carers and other topics identified by the Carers.

Connect U is delivered via monthly Focus and Support Groups as well as specific training modules. You will find this program very informative and also an opportunity to network with other carers.

Connect Creatively

Social and recreational programs chosen by carers which encourage relaxation and enjoyment away from the caring role. This group of programs is fundamental to carers as it emphasises the importance of health, socialisation and learning, all separate from the relationship of caring. Some of the activities that carers have an option to participate in include yoga, social golf, art, aquaerobics, computer programs, dancing. Programs are offered in response to carer's preferences.
